500KB lets a large PNG keep its dimensions and nearly all of its colour depth. It is the right target when you need the file under a CMS or email limit but do not want to see any difference.
PNG is a lossless format, so unlike JPEG there is no quality slider to turn down — saving at “lower quality” produces a byte-identical file. What a PNG actually pays for is the number of distinct colours it contains. This tool reduces the colour count until the file fits your target, and only reduces the pixel dimensions if colour reduction alone cannot get there. Transparency is preserved either way.
For photographs, JPEG at the same file size will almost always look better. PNG is the right choice when you need transparency or crisp flat colour — logos, icons, screenshots and diagrams.
